SIR JOHN LYLE of Duchal, with whom the known pedigree of the Lyles of
Duchal must commence. Sir John appears on 25 Nov. 1366, when he resigned
the lands of Lathhame in the constabulary of Haddington, which had been
granted him by the King in the escheat of Malcolm de Fauside, in favor of the
said Malcolm. On 16 October 1369, Sir John witnessed letters of Bailiary by
Robert, Steward of Scotland, to Alan of Lauder, over his lands in
Berwickshire. Sir John's wife was MARGARET DE VAUS, with whom he had a
charter of the lands of Boquhan or Buchan, co. Stirling, dated 15 March
1368/9. _The Scots Peerage_ assigns three sons to Sir John, named John,
ALEXANDER, and WILLIAM (of whom below).
